Demokratian aika

Intia juhli itsenäisyyttään 15.8. juhlavissa merkeissä, kun 60 vuotta itsenäisyyden aikaa ja demokratiaa tuli täyteen. Mumbain kaduilla ihmiset tulivat vastaan hymy huulilla, iloinen ilme kasvoilla, ja Intian lippu paidan rintamukseen liimattuna tai kädessä heiluen. Tunnelma oli rauhallinen ja leppeän iloinen, tiukennetuista turvatoimista ja ennakkovaroituksista huolimatta.

Arkipäivä ei Intiassa(kaan) ole kuitenkaan aina täynnä rauhaa ja sopua. Esimerkiksi Kashmirin alue Pohjois-Intiassa on levoton vuodesta toiseen. Intialaiset ovat ylpeitä demokratiastaan, mutta se ei ole tuonut täydellistä rauhaa maahan.

Paikallisesta lehdestä, Hindustan Timesista, luin koskettavan, kantaaottavan runon itsenäisyyspäivän aattona:

Do we call this freedom?

Even after 60 years of
Freedom,
The question still arises –
Are we really free?

Free – when people die of
Malnutrition and hunger,
And animals are fed
With the best of food?

Free – when animals are
made to live in best of houses,
And people live on the streets in
broken shacks?

Free – when animals are taken
Care of when sick
And people die of hunger,
Sickness and
malnutrition?
Is this freedom?
When people are discarded
As rubbish?

Is this freedom
Then we have to rethink
Our choices –
Whether we have fulfilled
our freedom fighters’ wishes,
Or are joining in letting
Our people down.

Is this freedom? Is this shame?
